On top of carrying out long-term projects, CISP also promotes campaigns of solidarity aimed at supporting local associations and basic services, often set up by local NGOs. Through the years, CISP has had the opportunity of getting in touch with different organisations and associations in numerous countries around the world and has valued their experience, and shared the same humanitarian principles.

Through solidarity campaigns, our organisation has succeeded in making Italian society more aware of the realities of poor countries, which need and deserve our support. CISP's role can therefore be seen as a bridge, or a tool, for dialogue, knowledge and solidarity.

HARAR CHILDHOOD

During the past ten years CISP has been working in the city of Harar where it has been in contact with the Hohite Misrak Child Care Centre, an institution founded in 1976 in order to assist orphan children and adolescents. In the past thirty years, the loss of adult members in families has been mainly caused by wars, famine, and, especially in more recent years, diseases such as HIV/ AIDS.

The Hohite Misrak Child Care Centre currently provides direct assistance to 243 children and adolescents, 68 of whom live in the centre's buildings, while the remaining 175 receive assistance through re-unification and re-integration interventions.

The main problem the Hohite Misrak Child Care Centre is currently faced with is the lack of adequate financial resources. This prevents the centre not only from hosting a larger number of children in its structures (which theoretically could host 500 children), but also from properly assisting those children that are already reintegrated into their communities of origin.

Everybody understands that water is the main source of life and that no one can survive without it. Unfortunately we do not always seem to realise that the lack of fresh and drinkable water is one of the main causes of disease currently affecting poor countries, not just in Africa but throughout the world.

The rate of premature school leavers is rapidly increasing due to the difficult economic conditions in which the childrenÕs families live. 19.50% of the countryÕs population lives below the poverty line, while around 30% of the population just manages to get by.

The simple but efficient initiative of this campaign aims at ensuring that 165 children starting primary school stay on in education. The programme focuses on the Municipalities of Sapna, Kalesija, Osmaci, and Srebrenica in the North Eastern part of Bosnia Herzegovina.
